A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Pender County Election Department on February 5, 2025, by SE North Carolina News. The request sought detailed information about all candidates running in the upcoming election.
As a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at SE North Carolina News requested this information under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. Our aim is to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to the public.
The records requested include a list of all candidates running for office in the upcoming election. We asked for details such as the candidate's first, middle, and last names; the office they are running for; jurisdiction of the office; and party affiliation of each candidate.
In addition to these details, we also requested contact information for each candidate. This includes their address, phone number, and email address.
Given our role in disseminating information to the public as a media organization, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as per standard procedures. We continue to wait for a response from the Pender County Election Department regarding our request.
