A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Brunswick County Election Department in North Carolina on February 5, 2025. The request was made by SE North Carolina News, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
The FOIA request seeks access to public records under the North Carolina Public Records Law, G.S. §132-1. Specifically, we at SE North Carolina News are seeking a list of all candidates running for the upcoming election in electronic format. The requested information includes:
- Candidates' first, middle, and last names
- The office each candidate is running for
- Jurisdiction of the office
- Party affiliation of each candidate
In addition to this, we have also requested contact information for each candidate which includes their address, phone number, and email address.
As a media organization, our role involves gathering and reporting news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We believe that as media professionals disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver.
